The empty bench
A bench on the apartment roof faces the busiest sky lane. Lan comes to draw the ships, then worries that the page must become something impressive. A sound recordist from next door also visits, sitting in headphones for long stretches. One evening he says the quiet makes it harder to record anything at all.
Nothing finished today
Lan shows him the empty sketchbook. After laughing, they agree to return next week and exchange one small thing they noticed, rather than finished work. First comes a newly replaced door handle. Then a window that lights up at the same time each evening. Eventually, drawings appear in Lan’s book and sounds in the recordist’s folder.
Chairs that can move
They replace the bench with two light chairs. They can sit closer, or turn toward separate views. When asked what their little group is called, neither has an answer. But people who come to the roof learn that “I didn’t make much progress today” is something another person can listen to all the way through.
Make it a small practice
- Record one sound, color, or movement you noticed today, without judging it.
- Write three lines: where it was, what happened, and why you remembered it.
- Read the notes a week later and choose one you want to explore further.
