A letter in five lines

The town post office opens a window for letters without addresses, limited to five lines.

An original work of fiction. Characters and destinations are not real users or travel services.

A small sheet of paper

At the new post-office window there is no address field, only small sheets of paper. Line one is for the weather; line two, something you are doing; line three, an unresolved question; line four, something small you appreciate. The fifth line is for whoever reads it. Nobody knows whether the first letter will receive a reply.

The first reply

The first letter comes from someone who bakes late at night. He asks why doing something he loves can still leave him tired. Three days later, a sheet decorated with a moon returns. It offers no explanation, only this: “Drawing does that to me too. What kind of bread did you make today?”

Letters without model answers

The baker’s next letter becomes more specific: the smell of butter, the moment the oven rings, the first crack in the crust. The writers gradually discover that not every question needs an immediate solution. Sometimes a person willing to ask a more particular question is enough to keep the story going.

Make it a small practice

  1. Write a five-line letter using the sequence in the story.
  2. Replace one vague judgment with something visible or audible.
  3. End with a question another person could comfortably answer.
