Clockwork Harbor: half a beat behind

Every clock runs half a beat behind the boats. Only those who pause hear the harbor strike the hour.

Stop one: the gear market

The market sells containers for time: empty watch cases, winding keys, and polished bells. A vendor offers a watch without hands for moments that minutes cannot describe. You have not yet decided which moment belongs inside it.

Stop two: the echo dock

Each boat finds its berth by its own sound. Boards, rope, and water form a slow rhythm. A dock worker asks you to speak a sentence into an empty boat. Its echo returns with fewer words, keeping the part you most want to remember.

Stop three: half-beat square

Nobody claps at exactly the same moment in the square. Each waits a little after the neighboring sound before adding their own. The harbor’s hour turns out not to belong to one clock. It is made from the small spaces people leave for each other.

Make it a small practice

  1. Draw a map of the destination with only three stops.
  2. Put a sound and a small object into your journal.
  3. Write a three-line postcard about the scene you want to keep.
