PARALLELA WORLD OF YOUR OWN
PARALLEL ORIGINALS / Listening guide

Listen before returning to the title

Compare hearing the music first with hearing it after returning to its title.

Listen as you read

The Four Seasons · Autumn

Antonio Vivaldi · The Modena Chamber Orchestra · Recording source · Public domain dedication

Three words first

Move the title out of view and listen to a short passage. Write three words: perhaps a speed, a color, or an action. They need not have anything to do with a season, and there is no model answer.

Bring the title back

Return to the title Autumn and replay the same passage. Notice whether you start seeking details you missed. The exercise does not claim that titles affect everybody in the same way; it records what happens for you this time.

Write in two columns

Keep one sentence under Without the title and another under With the title. If your response stays the same, record that too. You can use this comparison with photographs, paintings, or your own videos to explore how naming participates in a work.

Make it a small practice

  1. Listen without looking at the title and write three words.
  2. Replay the same passage with the title in mind.
  3. Write one honest note about each experience.
